When buying optical comparator a few key elements must be considered. Opticals have many unique characteristics. But the principle of all is that they project a magnified shadow of inspected object on a glass screen. So the key elements when buying this comparators are lenses, screen size and light path.

Optical comparator lenses are usually available with wide range of optical zoom, from basic 5X to enormous 500X. Some comparators feature special lenses turret. This allows for easy installation of multiple lenses with different zoom levels. This greatly reduces the operation and maintenance cost, as in order to change magnification level operator have to only turn turret instead of dismounting and replacing entire lens.

Second element that has to be taken under consideration, when buying optical comparator is screen size. Today, this comparator screen sizes are available from 10" to 80". Screen size in combination with zoom level determines how much of an inspected part can be viewed without the need to move particular object.

What You Should Know When Buying Optical Comparator

Light path is available in two variants, horizontal and vertical. Vertical light path instruments have a beam of light traveling vertically. Parts being inspected are placed on a plate of glass that the light beam travels through. Vertical comparators are ideal for flat parts like gaskets, O rings, stamped parts and electronics. Horizontal light path instruments have a beam of light traveling horizontally across a work stage. This type of machine is ideal for large heavy parts and shafts to be held on V blocks or between centers. Typical applications include castings, transmission shafts, thread form measurement and machined components.

Additional factors that should be considered are optional tools and accessories and digital readouts. Basic XY digital readout is recommended if only measurement of positions and distances are required. If measurement of circles, angles, and parametric distance is required, then readout with geometric capability is the best choice. Repetitive part measurement may encourage the selection of a CNC capable readout. Automatic edge sensing should be considered to eliminate operator subjectivity and increase repeatability and accuracy.
